Prenatal Development and Education:

Throughout the first half of a patient's pregnancy, she visits one of the medical team members at least every 4 weeks. Once a patient reaches 27 weeks in her pregnancy, she is seen once every two weeks until she reaches 36 weeks, at which time the patient visits us weekly until she delivers.

  • A prenatal educator meets with each patient at specific times throughout the pregnancy to discuss a variety of pregnancy, delivery and post-delivery issues.
  • Patients are encouraged to participate in prenatal classes, which explores the various stages of labor and delivery, explaining coping skills and pain management.

What You'll Learn
Prenatal education differs from prenatal classes in a variety of ways, primarily in that it is individualized. All patients receive prenatal education at 27 weeks and 36 weeks gestation. During the first meeting, a variety of issues are discussed:

  • Pre-term labor
  • When to call the doctor
  • Whether to breast or bottle feed
  • How to count fetal movements

Thirty-
SIX
WEEKS

During a patient's second meeting at 36 weeks,
additional discussion includes:

          • Designing a birth plan
          • Feeding issues and nutritional support
          • Importance of infant safety car seats
          • Baby's pediatrician
          • Birth control after delivery

SIX
WEEKS

The 6-week series of prenatal classes gives participants
a more in-depth view of labor and delivery, focusing on
issues like:

          • How to tell the difference between true or false labor
          • Pain management
          • Caring for mom's body after delivery

Patients and their birth partners are encouraged to attend these classes.
